The Ambassador Hotel
and
The Chalkboard Restaurant

Built during the oil boom in the 1920's by Maj. Gen. Patrik Hurley, The Hotel Ambassador first served as a stately and luxurious residence for wealthy oil barons awaiting completion of their Tulsa mansions.

Much to the delight of the hotel's patrons The Chalkboard was opened in the 70's in the grand Hotel Ambassador. Throughout the 70's and 80's the award-winning restaurant, nestled in the lower level of the hotel, was truly more famous than the Ambassador name.

The original owner John Phillips' vision was a rather simple New York feel, focusing on a blend of European Continental dishes displayed on large chalkboards in the dining area. Over the years, The Chalkboard earned every dining award in Tulsa and was one of the most popular places to eat.

In addition to sharing history and a picturesque Uptown location
with the Hotel Ambassador, The Chalkboard shares with it a unique elegance and dedication to unparalleled customer service. For the last 10 years the Chalkboard's owner, Max Doyle, has honed these traditions while infusing downtown with a renewed sense of life and style.

With this grand introduction to a Tulsa Icon located at 1324 Main Street, just south of the central business district, three members of Tulsa Breakfast Club visited the Chalkboard restaurant for a second time, and suffice it to say there are good days and no so good days in the restaurant business. This visit was somewhat disappointing primarily due to questionable service that is not indicative of experiences with The Chalkboard Restaurant.

We each selected a different breakfast from a menu that included “standard” fare and continental offerings created by the chef.

    We enjoyed the following entrees:

The Chalkboard Breakfast - Three Eggs poached with Country Ham Steak, served     with an English Muffin and Hash Browns. Fresh fruit was an alternative to the Hash Browns.

The Basic – Two eggs fried, broken, and cooked over hard, with Smoked Bacon, White Toast and Hash Browns.

The Chalkboard Frittata - Open Faced Italian Omelet with Caramelized Onions & Smoked Bacon, Asiago Cheese, & topped with a Cherry Tomato Salad, served with Fresh Fruit.

We concurred that a “C” rating was appropriate, for not only service as mentioned, but also comments about over-cooked poached eggs, and Hash Browns not properly drained from cooking. On the plus side, The Chalkboard Frittata was rated very good!
