Morning Fastbreakers

  Frank’s Café

Today, we, the Fast Breakers, elected to visit Frank’s Café at 5451 South Mingo. The name sounded familiar and when I got there, I realized I had been there 25 or 30 years ago. There used to be a Bridge parlor nearby that I frequented back in my Bridge playing days. We would go to Frank’s for lunch.

This morning, however, we were there to analyze the breakfast. I ordered the Frank’s Special Omelet, which was a regular omelet with home fries, toast, and orange wedge. I recommend staying away from the Mixed Fruit jelly spread. It was like bubble gum. The other flavors were spreadable. The omelet was good, but too much filling. I gave it a “B.”

The second clubber ordered Frank’s Popular Skillet. It was a hodgepodge of ham and bacon bits with home fries mixed in and two poached eggs on top with biscuits and gravy on the side. It was served in a little oval shaped iron skillet which was on a little board. He gave it a “C”.

The third clubber ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, two eggs, and home fries with biscuits and gravy on the side. That was the biggest chicken fried steak I have ever seen. It turns out that most of it was batter and it was tough. He left most of it, but he did like the home fries. He gave it a “D.”

We opted not to try Frank’s Famous Homemade Cinnamon rolls, tempting as they looked. We didn’t want to push our luck.

The ambiance is rather folksy with photographs on the wall and specials painted on the windows. We sat at table #25 in the back thinking it was a safe place to make our observations. Suddenly a part of the wall opened and gusts of cold air blew in. It was a door. The deliveryman delivered three stacks of stuff. We were sitting under the EXIT sign.

We, the Fast Breakers, risk life and limb and sometimes upset stomachs to bring our readers the best possible critique. We gave this one a “C” and had some reservations about that.
